Late Night Clinics
We are pleased to announce that we now hold late night appointments up until 7:30pm every Monday night. Please note that reception is closed to general queries and prescription collections.

Please try to keep your appointment and arrive at the surgery in good time. If you are unable to make your appointment, please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer your appointment to another patient.

Out of Hours
If you need to see a doctor outside normal surgery hours, please telephone the normal practice number – 01274 224 888 – and you will be directed to our emergency on-call doctor service.  Alternatively, you can call 111 for any health queries.

EXTENDED ACCESS SERVICE - Evening and Weekend Appointments

From 1st October 2018, the practice is part of the Extended Access service which provides GP, Physiotherapy, Nurse and Healthcare Assistant appointments from the following locations (hubs) across Bradford:

  1. North hub: Shipley Medical Practice, Alexandra Road, Shipley, Bradford BD18 3EG
  2. Central hub: Picton Medical Centre, Westbourne Green Community Health Care Centre, Manningham, Bradford BD8 8RA
  3. South hub: The Ridge Medical Practice, Cousen Road, Bradford BD7 3JX

As a registered patient with this practice, you have access to the following:

Weekday evening appointments

Evening appointments from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at any of the three hubs to see one of the following, subject to availability:

  • GP
  • Physiotherapist
  • Nurse for Asthma reviews and Smears
  • Healthcare Assistant for blood tests and blood pressure checks
  • Voluntary Sector Services including young people's counselling, carer support services, welfare and benefits advice, mental health support and women's specific support

Weekend appointments

Weekend and bank holiday appointments are available with a GP from 10am to 1pm from the Central hub.  Young People's Counselling services are also available from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays from the Central hub.

The service is run by Bradford Care Alliance, which represents all GP practices in the Bradford area.  Appointments are with GPs and other healthcare staff who work in the area, so your appointment may not be with a clinician from this practice.

Bowling Hall Medical Practice Walk in Clinic

Mondays & Thursdays 1.30pm-2.30pm

The Practice has recently introduced a walk-in clinic every week on Monday and Thursday afternoons. 

In order to book in to the walk-in clinic you must book in at the front desk between 1:30pm and 2:30pm.  No patients will be booked into the walk-in clinic outside of this time.

The Walk in Clinic provides an alternative that guarantees you will be seen that day but you may have to wait a little longer as there are no set appointment times. As there is no limit to the number of people attending the walk in clinic we cannot control waiting times.

For those patients that prefer a fixed appointment time we still offer pre-bookable and same day appointments. You are also able to book these on line which is easier than having to ring and can be done at any time of the day.

Change to Gluten-free (GF) prescribing



NHS Bradford City and NHS Bradford Districts CCGs are responsible for commissioning your healthcare.


CCGs make decisions about local need, including the purchasing and monitoring of services in the area they cover. CCGs have a responsibility to commission safe and effective services that deliver the best affordable care within the resources available.


Following a public consultation, NHS Bradford City and NHS Bradford Districts CCGs have now decided that they can no longer fund the prescribing of gluten-free (GF) foods on prescription. This will come into effect from 1 December 2016 – after this date you will not be able to obtain any gluten free food products on prescription at all.


The NHS spends £25 million a year on prescribing GF food. Locally the NHS will save more than £320,000 which they need to invest into other patient services.


For the past 30 years the NHS has prescribed GF foods to patients who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease. This service started when GF foods were not readily available. GF products are now widely available in supermarkets and are sold at prices which are considerably lower than the NHS is charged when GF products are bought for prescriptions. In fact, the charge to the NHS can be six to ten times the price of a similar product in local shops.


Gluten is naturally present in wheat, rye and barley but it is not essential to your diet and can be replaced by other foods. There are a number of naturally gluten-free sources carbohydrates which are widely available that can be used instead without the need to buy specific gluten free replacement products. Examples include rice, potatoes and flour alternatives such as millet and corn flour. We strongly recommend that you continue to avoid gluten in your diet - more information can be found on the NHS Choices website at and at

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – Changes to Repeat Prescription Ordering



From 1st November 2016 CCGs in Bradford have begun a process which may change the way you order your repeat prescriptions.  The new scheme means that Pharmacies will no longer be able to order medicines on behalf of patients. Patients will therefore need to order their medications directly from their GP practice.  This change will be in place throughout Bradford by 31st January 2017 at the latest.


This decision was made for several reasons. The hope is that this will empower people to have more control and understanding of their medicines.  It will also help us to eliminate prescription wastage by allowing people to only order the medicines they need.


Please note that this only affects the way you order your medicines. If your pharmacy currently collects and/or delivers your medicines then this will continue unchanged.  If your prescriptions are sent to the pharmacy electronically then this will also continue unchanged.


How you can order your medicines

There are several ways to order your medicines. The most convenient way is to sign up for our online services which allow you to order medications online.  We have registration forms available in our reception area which you can fill in whenever is convenient.  Please be aware that as our online services link directly to your medical records we do require sight of ID before we register you. 


There is also a free App available for Apple and Android from the app store which allows you to access our online services from your phone or tablet.  Just search for ‘SystmOnline’ in the app store to install it.


We realise that we have a number of patients who do not have internet access. You can still order your medicines by handing the counterfoil from your prescription into reception, or by posting it to us.


Please be aware that we do not take requests for medication over the telephone.  When medicines are requested over the phone mistakes are more likely because of confusion with drug names or their pronunciation.  Written or electronic requests allow for records to be matched more accurately.


For those patients who are housebound or who genuinely have difficulty ordering their medicines we are willing to discuss other methods to ensure that you can still order your medications easily. Please call the surgery to discuss this.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England.  They make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and we encourage care services to improve.

Part of the role of CQC involves actively assessing GP Practices across England.  This involves a thorough inspection of the practice.

Bowling Hall Medical Practice had its most recent inspection on 17th November 2015, and the full report of this inspection was published on 3rd March 2016.  We were rated as 'Good' overall, and as 'Good' in all of the individual categories.

This year, the NHS has launched a new scheme which means that every patient is allocated a particular General Practitioner who will be the one ultimately responsible for ensuring that the care you receive is the most appropriate it can be.

Having this allocated GP does not alter the way in which you make your appointments - you can still book appointments with who you want.  Every member of staff shares responsibility for the care you receive.

From the beginning of December, GP Practices across the country will be running a short survey called the 'Friends and Family Test'.  Some of you may have completed this questionnaire last Winter, as our Practice was one of the pilots for the survey.

The Test consists of a single question - 'How likely are you to recommend our Practice to your friends or family?'  There is also space to add a reason for your choice.  You can complete the survey as many times as you like.
